All life ages as time goes by, and a natural outcome of the ageing process is the shrinking of the brain. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/metabolic-health-and-the-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cognitive decline<\/a><\/em> is the ageing of neurons and a decrease in the speed at which the brain functions. There is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/12-ways-to-keep-your-brain-young\">&nbsp;<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/12-ways-to-keep-your-brain-young\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evidence<\/a><\/em> that high-quality nutrition (a diet that\u2019s high-fiber, rich in fruits, vegetables and unsaturated fats) and regular exercise are critical in keeping cognitive decline to a minimum. It\u2019s important to understand how food affects our brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neurological Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Improving <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/rewiring-your-brain#exercise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brain plasticity<\/a><\/em>, which involves stimulating brain cells to create new connections, is an important part of maintaining brain health. There is also evidence that keeping our minds active can help in generating new brain cells that can protect us from future loss of cells. Playing video games, learning a new language, making music, travelling, exercising and making art are some ways one can improve brain plasticity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Metabolic Health &amp; The Brain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/how-to-improve-your-metabolic-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metabolic health<\/a><\/em> is described as having ideal levels of blood sugar, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, blood pressure, and waist circumference, without using medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/metabolic-health-and-the-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glucose<\/a><\/em> is the primary source of fuel for the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The human brain needs a constant flow of glucose for our cells to function. Although our brain is less than 2% of our body weight, it needs up to 20% of its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3900881\/#:~:text=The%20mammalian%20brain%20depends%20on%20glucose%20as%20its%20main%20source%20of%20energy.&amp;text=In%20humans%2C%20the%20brain%20accounts,tissue%20per%20minute%20%5B2%5D).\">&nbsp;<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3900881\/#:~:text=The%20mammalian%20brain%20depends%20on%20glucose%20as%20its%20main%20source%20of%20energy.&amp;text=In%20humans%2C%20the%20brain%20accounts,tissue%20per%20minute%20%5B2%5D).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">glucose<\/a><\/em> to produce energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glucose is critical for cellular maintenance and also helps in creating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an energy transferring molecule that stores energy and releases it as fuel for cellular activity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insulin is a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/Does-Insulin-Affect-the-Brain.aspx\">&nbsp;<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/Does-Insulin-Affect-the-Brain.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hormone<\/a><\/em> released by the pancreas. It regulates glucose in the body. Insulin is responsible for managing protein, carbohydrate metabolism, and helping cellular growth and division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we eat, insulin levels in our body increase to absorb the sugar spike in our blood and store it for energy. This makes the glucose levels in our bloodstream decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pancreas then produces glucagon, a hormone that prompts the liver to release stored sugar. The interaction between glucagon and blood sugar is vital for stable blood glucose levels in the brain and body. However, with age, the risk of<a href=\"https:\/\/dmsjournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13098-020-0523-x\">&nbsp;<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/dmsjournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13098-020-0523-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insulin resistance<\/a><\/em> increases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cells of individuals who have insulin resistance don&#8217;t respond well to insulin, barring glucose from entering them with ease. The glucose level in their blood rises over time, even as their body produces more insulin, and the cells resolutely resist it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk of insulin resistance is associated with senile skeletal muscle dysfunction. The experiments showed an unexpected link between how the mitochondria of brain cells make energy and how the same cells signal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brain cells couple these two independent functions by using small chemical messengers called reactive oxygen species (or ROS), that are normally associated with signaling cell death. While ROS are known to have roles in diseases of ageing, such as Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s, the new study shows they also play important roles in the healthy brain.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/emm20164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>brain<\/em><\/a> modulates various aspects of metabolism, such as food intake, energy expenditure, insulin secretion, hepatic glucose production and glucose\/fatty acid metabolism in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highly coordinated interactions between the brain and peripheral metabolic organs are critical for the maintenance of energy and glucose homeostasis. Defective crosstalk between the brain and peripheral organs contributes to the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Neuronutrition Food?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our brains function best when we eat a nutritious and balanced diet. High-quality foods that contain fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals nourish the brain and protect it from oxidative stress\u2014the waste produced when the body uses oxygen, which can damage brain cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Low-quality foods, often processed and refined, are not the best choice for our brains and bodies. Our bodies produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate sleep and appetite, mediate moods and inhibit pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>95% of serotonin is produced in our gastrointestinal tract, which is lined with millions of nerve cells, or neurons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genomind.com\/blog\/how-food-can-affect-your-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">function<\/a><\/em> of these neurons and the production of serotonin is highly influenced by the billions of \u201cgood\u201d bacteria that make up our intestinal microbiome. These bacteria play an essential role in our health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They protect the lining of our intestines and provide a strong barrier against toxins and \u201cbad\u201d bacteria. They also limit inflammation, improve how well we absorb nutrients from food and activate neural pathways that travel directly between the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/jphysiolanthropol.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40101-016-0101-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gut and brain<\/a><\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foods rich in protein contain amino acids to help produce key neurotransmitters in preventing and treating depression and anxiety. A diet rich in protein also helps improve energy levels, giving you the strength to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mhconn.org\/31daysofwellness\/day-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">get moving and feel better.<\/a><\/em> Amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, play an important role in the production of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals which allow brain cells to communicate with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For example,<\/strong> if you eat a piece of chicken, your body breaks down the protein and synthesizes the amino acid L-Tyrosine to produce dopamine. Low dopamine levels are associated with a whole host of disorders, including <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/evolutionary-psychiatry\/201105\/dopamine-primer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depression, addiction, ADHD, Alzheimers and schizophrenia.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amino acid L-Tryptophan, which can be found in poultry, fish, dairy, spinach, soy products, pumpkin and sunflower seeds and nuts, serves a precursor to serotonin. Eating foods rich in<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mhconn.org\/nutrition\/protein-and-mental-health\/#:~:text=The%20foods%20you%20eat%20impact,and%20treating%20depression%20and%20anxiety.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;L-Tryptophan<\/a><\/em> can help improve mood and help SSRIs and other antidepressants work more effectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A balanced diet with enough carbs is essential for good brain health. Eliminating carbohydrates from your diet may help you lose <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/news\/20081212\/no-carb-diets-may-impair-memory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weight<\/a><\/em>, but it could leave you fuzzy-headed and forgetful, a new study suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One week after starting a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weight loss diet<\/a><\/em> that severely restricted carbohydrates, participants in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/news\/20081212\/no-carb-diets-may-impair-memory#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tufts University&nbsp;<\/a><\/em>study performed significantly worse on memory tests than participants who followed a low calorie, high-carbohydrate diet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/news\/20081212\/no-carb-diets-may-impair-memory#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carbs<\/a><\/em> are imperative for brain health because the body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which it uses to fuel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/brain\/ss\/slideshow-concussions-brain-injuries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brain<\/a><\/em> activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proteins break down into glycogen, which can also be used for fuel by the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/brain\/rm-quiz-amazing-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brain<\/a><\/em>, but not as efficiently as glucose. Dysfunctions of the intestinal barrier increase the risk of endotoxins gaining access to systemic circulation, development of a chronic inflammatory state and higher susceptibility to brain disease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eating diets high in fat and sugar can cause obesity and diabetes, which can lead to increased risk of memory loss or dementia as we age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eating a high-fat-and-sugar diet can have a negative effect on neurons, reducing dendrites and synapses and leading to neuroinflammation that affects learning and memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthy fats help the brain function more efficiently. They are characterized as omega-3 fatty acids. Healthy fats are typically found in fatty fish, such as salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to saturated fats, one of the clear winners is coconut oil. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5745680\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research suggests<\/a><\/em> it may help increase HDL cholesterol. Saturated fats found in meat and dairy products were once considered bad fats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/fitminds.ca\/brain-health-nutrition-your-fat-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2013<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/fitminds.ca\/brain-health-nutrition-your-fat-brain\/\">&nbsp;<\/a>study from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drperlmutter.com\/study\/relative-intake-macronutrients-impacts-risk-mild-cognitive-impairment-dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Mayo Clinic<\/a><\/em> suggests that individuals consuming a diet high in saturated fats reduced their risk of dementia by 36%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges (AMDR) are 45\u201365% of your daily calories from carbs, 20\u201335% from fats and 10\u201335% from protein. Some foods to avoid for better health are sugar drinks like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/13-ways-sugary-soda-is-bad-for-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soda<\/a><\/em>, sports drinks, energy drinks and fruit juice, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/why-refined-carbs-are-bad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refined carbohydrates<\/a><\/em> including sugars and highly processed grains such as white flour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These types of carbs generally have a high glycemic index (GI). This means your body digests them quickly, causing a spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels. Healthy, lower-GI carbs include foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/why-trans-fats-are-bad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Trans fats<\/em><\/a> are a type of unsaturated fat that can have a detrimental effect on brain health. While trans fats occur naturally in animal products like meat and dairy, these are not a major concern. It\u2019s industrially produced trans fats, also known as hydrogenated vegetable oils, that are a problem. These artificial trans fats can be found in shortening, margarine, frosting, snack foods, ready-made cakes and prepackaged cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.neurobiologyofaging.org\/article\/S0197-4580(14)00355-8\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.neurobiologyofaging.org\/article\/S0197-4580(14)00355-8\/fulltext\">&nbsp;<\/a>have found that when people consume higher amounts of trans fats, they tend to have an increased risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, poorer memory, lower brain volume and cognitive decline.<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1530-0277.2011.01540.x\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1530-0277.2011.01540.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Excess alcohol consumption<\/a><\/em> is linked to reduction in brain volume, metabolic changes and disruption of neurotransmitters, which are chemicals the brain uses to communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Excess-alcohol-consumption-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Excess-alcohol-consumption-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Excess-alcohol-consumption-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Excess-alcohol-consumption-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Excess-alcohol-consumption-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Excess-alcohol-consumption-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inflammation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/ss\/slideshow-what-is-inflammation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inflammation<\/a><\/em> is a process by which your body&#8217;s white blood cells and the chemicals they make protect you from infection from outside invaders, such as bacteria and viruses. But in some diseases, like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/arthritis\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arthritis<\/a><\/em>, your body&#8217;s defense system\u2014your <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cold-and-flu\/immune-system-function\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immune system<\/a><\/em>\u2014triggers inflammation when there are no invaders to fight off. In these <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/autoimmune-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autoimmune diseases<\/a><\/em>, your immune system acts as if regular tissues are infected or somehow unusual, causing damage. Inflammation can affect your organs as part of an autoimmune disorder. The symptoms depend on which organs are affected. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oxidative stress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A phenomenon caused by an imbalance between production and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells and tissues and the ability of a biological system to detoxify these reactive products. Multiple studies have found a correlation between a diet high in refined sugars and impaired brain function, and even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/what-causes-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>depression<\/em><\/a>. If your brain is deprived of good-quality nutrition, or if free radicals or damaging inflammatory cells are circulating within the brain\u2019s enclosed space, further contributing to brain tissue injury, consequences are to be expected.
