It is tethered to the fight or flight response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stress response starts in the brain. In case of stress or perceived stress, the amygdala (area of the brain that contributes to emotional processing) decodes the sights and sounds and sends an SOS signal to the hypothalamus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amygdala interprets the images and sounds. When it perceives danger, it instantly sends a distress signal to the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus communicates with the body through the autonomic nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you experience stress or sense danger (whether real or perceived), the sympathetic nervous system is mobilized. It stimulates the adrenal glands to set off the secretion of catecholamines (including adrenaline and noradrenaline).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leads to a spike in heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Blood is pushed to the vital organs. These are evolutionary adaptations to increase the chance of survival in life-threatening situations. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/impact-of-adrenaline-on-blood-glucose-and-5-ways-to-reduce-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Adrenaline gears the body for the fight-or-flight response<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It causes a sharp, but short-lived, increase in insulin resistance. This \u2018stress hormone\u2019 can directly impact our glucose levels &#8211; by spiking the amount of circulating glucose. It floods the body with glucose to provide a prompt source of energy to fight or flee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the initial deluge of epinephrine subsides, the hypothalamus rouses the HPA axis, consisting of the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The HPA axis relies on a series of hormonal signals to moderate the sympathetic nervous system. If the brain continues to detect something threatening in the environment, the hypothalamus triggers the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It travels to the adrenal glands and incites them to release cortisol. The body thus continues to stay on high alert. It inhibits insulin to prevent the storage of glucose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the threat passes, cortisol levels drop to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, which elicits the relaxation response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With frequent increases in cortisol levels and subsequent glucose spikes, one can <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/94\/8\/2692\/2596309?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>become more susceptible to metabolic syndrome<\/em><\/a><em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Left unchecked or with frequent occurrences, a pattern of cortisol release can leave blood sugar &amp; glucose levels at a dangerously uplifted baseline.
