HbA1c is what’s known as glycated haemoglobin. This is something that’s made when the glucose (sugar) in your body sticks to your red blood cells. Your body can’t use the sugar properly, so more of it sticks to your blood cells and builds up in your blood.

HbA1c ranges

According to American Diabetes Association, these are the HbA1c ranges –

  • 4% to 5.6% – This is the normal range of HbA1c.
  • 5.7% to 6.4% – This indicates you have prediabetes and a higher chance of getting diabetes. Consult a doctor if you have estimated HbA1c in this range.
  • 6.5% or higher – This indicates that you have diabetes. Consult a doctor if you have estimated HbA1c in this range.
