One of the reasons for hyperglycemia is the consumption of concentrated simple carbohydrates directly absorbed into the bloodstream. Pineapple juice, for instance, is high in simple carbs that can cause a sugar spike in the body. Particularly, the canned variants tend to have added sugar. However, there are certain ways to optimize the consumption of such juices to prevent sudden surges in blood sugar levels.

Stabilizing glucose metabolism in spite of pineapple juice intake
• To balance to sugar spike, consider the following modifications
• Limit the portion to 100 ml.
• Consider adding fenugreek seeds to the pineapple juice.
• Try combining it with a breakfast high in protein, such as eggs, tofu, or paneer.

• As protein and fat take longer to leave the stomach after eating, consider eating them before consuming the juice to slow down how quickly the body absorbs glucose.

Pineapple is a rich source of vitamins and fibre. It is indeed a medium-GI food; however, it can be optimized even further and must be consumed in moderation to prevent blood glucose spikes. Unsweetened juices are better for glucose levels. Try opting for raw or frozen pineapple over juice, and pair these with protein for slower sugar absorption.
